Every surface touched in my dungeon has a three-fold cleaning technique taught to me by doctors, including infectious disease specialists. Nothing is infallible and kills 100% of germs, but these methods are held to higher standards found in hospitals. With so much disinfecting, I have found it better to invest in quality, sturdy materials that can stand up to such ridged cleaning. Still, each material gets special treatment. Step 1: Superficial Wiping

For my convenience, I use handy disinfectant wipes to clean off the superficial dirt, skin cells, oils, etc, on each surface. It is better to use the wipes specifically for cleaning general surfaces. Baby wipes are for skin and leave behind a lotion residue making the next steps difficult with more to clean.

Step 2: Disinfectant Procedures

This step is where it gets complicated. It may seem like a lot, but it will benefit in the long run.

One of the reasons I prefer to have a lot of nonporous surfaces is how intensely you can clean them. Vinyl, metal, rigid plastic, and the like can use industrial-grade detergent soap to clean. Nothing makes me more confident in the cleanliness of my equipment than using a special cleaner. Be sure to wear gloves as it will dry out your skin, and wash it all off after cleaning as residue will be sticky and unpleasant.

Silicone toys need some special treatment with a special soap spray. I use MR B Clean Care. This soap is gentler, so the silicone doesn’t break down. Because of this, I always like to have them covered when I use them–with gloves or condoms–before they come into contact with skin. For porous surfaces–mainly leather and wood, the choice for disinfecting is rubbing alcohol. It is essential to let the alcohol dry, not wipe it off, and certainly not wash it off. Rubbing alcohol works by killing bacteria by drying them out. So as you can see, washing it off–just adding water defeats the purpose. Of course, it will dry out the material, but it is the trade-off for sanitary practices. Do not use soap on leather or wood; it will absorb and become sticky.

Step 3: Antiviral Wipes

These wipes can be found on medical supply websites. After the first two steps, this should be easy, just getting the product on the surfaces to kill cold, flu, and other viral nasties.

Do you have to do all of these things? Probably not, but it helps me feel confident when I select a toy from my arsenal. Instead, I focus on what I am about to do to my subject rather than worry about whether I should use it.
